Tenganan is situated 65 kilometers east of Denpasar. A unique native balinese village known as Bali aga .
Some say tenganan means tengah or midlle , since the village is situated in the middle of hills . another version says the people of tenganan people come from Peneges , a village situated near Bedulu in Gianyar regency. According to a folk lore , unce upon a time king of Bedulu lost one of his horses. The horse was found dead by his right hand Ki Tunjung Biru . For his effort the king gave Ki Tunjung Biru the authority to govern the land as far as the the aroma of the carrion of the horse can be smelled . Smartly he slipped piece of the carrion under his cloth when the king sent his representative to check the area . as far as they walk the smell of the dead horse were notable . After he think that he had had enough he decided to stop. Thats how this village gain their large land area .
Pegeringsingan derive from word "geringsing" . Geringsing is traditional woven product that is only found in this village. They believe this double ikat woven cloth has magical power the evil spirit or black magic." Gering" means disease and " sing " means no.
The village is inhabited by 600 people with strong comunal living , their activities started in the morning as soon as the large wooden trunk is sounded. meanwhile before dawn all visitors politely suggested to exit the village. Only the villagers remain .
